Jagmeet Singh is a lawyer, human rights activist, and the Leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP). Born on January 2, 1979, in Scarborough, Ontario, to immigrant parents from Punjab, India, Jagmeet’s upbringing in Scarborough, St. John’s, and Windsor instilled in him a deep commitment to justice and equality.
Facing bullying and discrimination during his youth, Jagmeet developed a strong sense of solidarity with marginalized communities, fueling his passion for addressing systemic injustices. He pursued a career in law to support organizations combating poverty and advocating for equal access to justice.
In 2011, Jagmeet was elected as the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Bramalea—Gore—Malton, becoming the first turban-wearing Sikh to sit in Ontario’s legislature. During his tenure, he championed issues such as reducing auto insurance rates and improving police accountability.
On October 1, 2017, Jagmeet made history by becoming the first person of a visible minority group to lead a major Canadian federal political party when he was elected leader of the NDP. Under his leadership, the party has focused on creating a fairer, more just Canada where everyone can realize their dreams.
